How 1st Gear Will Help You Achieve Your 2020 Resolutions

We only turn our cars on when we actually want to go somewhere.

While driving, we spend a great deal of our time in first gear.

We move through it and come back down into it.

It is our foundation.

And unless we master how to carefully get out of first gear, we will continue to roll down that hill we're on.

First gear matters. A lot.

The first gear of New Year’s resolution making and keeping includes starting slowly, really slowly.  Like trying to get that car moving on a steep hill from stop kind of slowly.

Begin slowly and get your car revving.

What’s the smallest step you can take to achieve your goal in 2020?

Want to lose 20 lbs?  What one thing can you do differently to only your dinner? Add a green? Drink a glass of water? Pick just one meal and shift one thing about it.

Choose one item to add or change that first week.

As you are successful with that one thing, you can add another the next week.

If you don’t keep to it the second week, drop back to first gear. No problem.

You are building foundation.

You are just beginning to rev your engine.

Resolutions are about making a life shift that changes your life, not your month or even your year.  It didn’t take a month to get your life into this place so it is sensible to take some time to shift your way back to the life you want slowly.

Want to begin an exercise routine? Buy a new pair of shoes or an outfit or commit yourself to one walk or one class the first week. Pick one small change.

Want to find more joy in your career? Begin your workday with one thing you are grateful for at work each day. Begin to see how your work shifts. Want an entirely new job? Start with editing just the first line of your resume.

You get it.

Start small, measurable and doable.

Let’s get your engine revving.

Not sure when you want to start your car or what area you want to shift?

Here’s an incredible chart from Chani Nicholas that helps you have a general idea what area you can expect to work on from an astrology perspective:

In short, the key components of the astrology of 2020 will impact the signs in the following ways:

  • Aries & Aries Rising – Professional growth, recognition for your efforts, and committing to the aspects of your career that matter most to you.

  • Taurus & Taurus Rising – Growth through committing to a destination that encourages your self-development, knowledge, and helps you gain the experiences most soulfully satisfying for you.

  • Gemini & Gemini Rising – Growth through committing to the healing practices you most need at this point on your life as committing to the collaborative efforts your life is calling for.

  • Cancer & Cancer Rising – Growth through committed partnerships and the developments of appropriate structures, boundaries, and responsibilities in personal and professional relationships.

  • Leo & Leo Rising – Growth through developing the structures and boundaries required to achieve what you want to in your work-life and for your overall well-being.

  • Virgo & Virgo Rising – Growth through committing to the structures your creative projects are calling for.

Begin small.

It's not recommended for you to shift your car from 1st gear to 4th gear. Your car begins to jerk as it tries to settle the imbalance.

The same is true for you.

So many New Year’s, many of us have tried to go from 1st to 4th and have freaked out at the imbalance.

We hadn't rev matched the speed we needed so we weren't prepared to move onto the next step.

But when we build that foundation, match the speed we need to shift gears and make our way through the natural progression, we are in the flow.

And when we’re in that flow, there is no more powerful of a feeling.
It’s so empowering to decide when to change gears, when to stay, when to let lose with the effortless feeling of moving between the gears and the chapters of our own life.

Get your engine revving!

Make one small shift at a time this January and watch yourself begin to enjoy the trip of a lifetime!

Happy 2020!

Much love,
Erin
