The Sixth Sense: Real-Life Edition
It was September 1999 and my Dad had passed away only a few weeks before and he would not leave me and my roommate alone. We would wake up in our 2-bedroom apartment and walk into the kitchen to make our coffee only to find all the cabinet doors and drawers open from his hanging out in the night. I would roll over in my sleep to feel his cool presence standing next to my bed which left me with two options: Hide deeper under my covers or run into my roommate's room and jump in her bed. Thankfully, she and I had been best friends since 7th grade so my running into her room to sleep in her bed in the middle of the night was not only comfortable but welcomed.
I was so relieved when I would run into her room and she would say, "Come in!" My dad would talk to me in my dreams and I would wake up bawling from such powerful experiences.
It was an intense few months as you can imagine.
He was what is called a hungry ghost. A human who abused a substance and continues to crave the experience and lingers until his craving is satiated or until enough people pray for their soul that they leave. Interestingly, addiction is often referred to as being "God-hungry" so when that hunger is filled, the soul is healed. My Dad actually left after an entire weekend church retreat had been held in his honor. This retreat helped deliver him to heaven and satiated his God-hungriness. I still remain so grateful for the grace and prayers offered during this retreat.
However, until that weekend, his hungriness resulted in our haunting.
It was about that same time that The Sixth Sense was released and since this was our life, I chose not to see it. I couldn't take any more of what we were already experiencing. Since everyone would respond to my stories with, "Oh yeah...just like The Sixth Sense" I felt like I knew the storyline anyway and certainly didn't want to encourage more of this experience in my life.
If I only knew then all that I know now. Life would have been very different. (Isn't that what we all say?)
I never watched The Sixth Sense until this weekend and not only did it depict this window of time in my 20's, it felt as if I was watching a more gruesome version of my childhood. I related to young Haley Joel Osment and experienced all the same things he experienced. I found the movie to be more of a self-help-relatable-healing experience than I did scary.
Years ago, at the suggestion of a friend, I sought out a medium coach to help me understand how to better equip myself with the tools I needed to live in this world less affected by those who have transitioned. It was such an empowering process.
I have done a handful of readings for loved ones and had not felt called to apply this gift to my professional life until now. Tomorrow, I will air my first live mediumship reading on my podcast. This podcast guest came in for a traditional Life Book session but her mom (who transitioned years ago) would not stop bothering me for the week prior because she wanted to speak to her so badly. This session was the farthest thing from spooky and was filled with so much love!!
Be sure to follow my podcast Love.Heal.Thrive. on Apple, Spotify or Podbean to be alerted when it airs on Monday, October 31st. It is touching and poignant and so special to my heart. I saw how helpful and healing this process was for her which is simply how I exist in the world. It was illuminating for us both.
Do you have cabinets randomly opening, things seeming to be misplaced or a strange feeling that makes you run down the hall in the middle of the night?
If you answered "yes" to any of the above questions, you may want to give this week's house blessing a try.
Years ago, we had spirits in our house that would wake us up in the night, make my daughters anxious about running down the hall or would pop out behind closet doors. It was annoying, to say the least.
But just like you call in help for other house challenges, you can call in help to clear and protect your house and it makes all the difference. We no longer have things go bump in the night and are no longer affected by spirits touching our things.
Call upon Archangel Michael.
Archangel Michael is the angel of protection, who can instantly remedy the situation. He wields a sword and a shield and is here to protect you. Police and fire-fighters often wear his medallion for protection. Feel free to call upon another Divine bodyguard if you prefer- Jesus, Buddha or someone that feels powerful and safe for you personally. I call on Archangel Michael and his mercy of angels to surround and protect my house.
On Halloween last year, I invited you to invite in Archangel Michael to stand at the opening of the veil to keep you safe. This year, I offer you a protection for your house itself.
Smudging process. While holding the sage in your hand, bless the dirt the foundation rests upon. Bless the foundation. Begin to burn the sage and allow the smoke to float into all four corners, across the room, under furniture, in closets. While smudging the doors to the outside, move the sage in a circle in a counter clock-wise direction and state, “I only allow love and light to enter here.” If you like, you may use the smoke to draw an emblem on each of the four walls (not actually touching the wall - just the essence of the smoke near the wall) of your home. You may use the sign of the cross, a heart, reiki symbols or any symbol that calls to you. This sets intention for the room and raises the vibration of the energy within it.
Prayer. This is the prayer I use every single night before I go to sleep. This has changed my home’s energy dramatically. I invite you to use this daily prayer too.
“Archangel Michael and your mercy of angels, thank you for standing at all four corners, all windows and doors and at the foot of every bed. Thank you for your golden dome of protection and your platinum net of protection. Thank you for removing all negative or imbalanced energies from this space and upon doing so, thank you for filling this space with love.”
You can add onto or replace “love” with what you want in your home - love, connection, peace, joy, laughter etc. I typically list a number of intentions every single night.
Front door screen. At the end of my smudging, I set an intention with the sage to create a cobweb-like film at the front door that will catch anything that is not of love and light and that it is caught in the web and unable to enter my home. This is a great technique if you often have people coming in and out of your home or before and after any large get-together.
Join me for today's meditation, How to smudge, clear and protect your home, to make sure your house only welcomes in the cute little tick-or-treaters you prefer tomorrow night and keeps out anything unwanted from your home. You will begin to feel the shift and feel empowered and secure within your home.
Happy Halloween! Have fun, be safe and empowered!
Much love,
Erin
